What is D-Aspartic Acid?

D-aspartic acid is a naturally occurring amino acid that is endogenous in nature. It can be found mainly in the endocrine and nervous tissues of the body.

D-aspartic acid is one of two forms of aspartic acid, which is a non-essential amino acid. The other form is l-aspartic acid. The l-isomer (l-aspartic acid) is 1 of the 20 standard amino acids.

How does D-Aspartic Acid increase testosterone?

D-aspartic acid increases testosterone levels naturally by increasing cAMP in the testicles, and cGMP in the pituitary gland.

cAMP plays a role as a secondary messenger to increase StaR expression. StaR is a carrier protein that assists in bringing cholesterol, which is the building block of testosterone, into the leydig cells to manufacture testosterone.

cGMP influences production of the luteinizing hormone. This is important because LH is the hormone that travels to the leydig cells of the testicles from the pituitary gland.

D-Aspartic Acid increase growth hormone too?

There have been no human trials to date in order to prove this but studies on animals have shown an increase in GH. These studies revealed elevated concentrations of NMDA, an endogenous hormone. NMDA does this by enhancing the release of GHRH (growth hormone release hormone). Elevated NMDA can promote certain side effects which you should read below.

What are the side effects of a daa supplement?

Gyno is always a concern when taking a supplement that elevates your testosterone levels. Any sign of tenderness around the nipple and you need to stop immediately.

Human studies are still being awaited in order to prove elevated NMDA levels, but, elevated levels of NMDA can promote migraines, and related symptoms, in those that are prone to them. So far, only animal studies have been done on d aspartic acid elevating NMDA concentrations.

How to dose a daa supplement?

Common dosing is 3.2 grams per day, but users dosing up to 6 grams per day without side effects is not uncommon.

Pill vs. Powder?

I have done research on this for myself and found that pills form appears to have more potential to increase the bioavailability of the d-aspartic acid giving our bodies better absorption. This assures that we are getting more out of the amount we are ingesting.

In comparison to a supplement like creatine, d-aspartic acid has a long way to go in order to prove its’ effectiveness and safety. As of right now, it appears to be quite effective and, for the most part, safe.  At this point, d-aspartic acid seems to be one of the best choices of testosterone boosters to increase testosterone production naturally.
